History of Economic International Relations

(most courses taught in the Czech language)

In recent years, due to globalization international relations gets to the forefront of social science problems. Unlike the “old” concept, when the international relations were understood as links between states and major policies, the so-called new international relations are promoted and defined as a wide network of contacts at the international, national and individual levels. This concept also corresponds to the focus of the minor “History of Economic International Relations.” A graduate will be acquainted with the basic tendencies of international relations in the 19^th and 20^th centuries, particularly in the context of activities of transnational institutions, non-state actors, soft powers, global governance, interest groups, and political parties in the context of the role of economics, gender and culture. A part of study interest will also be contemporary discussions of international relations theories (realism versus idealism) and review of the fundamental studies of the history of international relations (Kissinger, Waltz, Gaddis, Westad, Huntington).

The minor’s aim is to show that current global world problems often have historical roots. Their knowledge and analysis can contribute to the solution of many of today’s issues. After successful completion of the minor, a graduate may work especially in diplomacy, multinational institutions, business, mass media, government, public institutions, and education. In addition to obtaining a series of new knowledge in the field of international relations, the minor offers a possibility of deepening the skills of working with literature and primary sources, especially in the self-study and preparation of seminar papers or theses. The minor relies on experienced and knowledgeable teachers, visiting foreign professors from around the world, a multidisciplinarity, personal approach to students, and the seminar method of teaching, using the latest equipment and intensive dialogue with students.

The state exam covers knowledge in a range of compulsory courses (5HD409, 5HD410, 5HD413). It provides 3 ECTS credits. Students of the minor will have to be enrolled in 5HP500 Diploma Thesis Seminar. Theses from students from other faculties will be processed individually.
