Ph.D. Program Major

Economic and Political History of the 20th Century

Ph.D. Program Economics and Economic Administration

The Ph.D. program major “Economic and Political History of the 20th Century” is intended for students with sufficiently deep knowledge of economic and political history, economic theory, history of economic thought, economic policy and fundamental knowledge of related disciplines (political science, sociology, philosophy, anthropology). In addition, applicants are expected to possess analytical skills and abstract thinking, which will help to classify the various historical events in a broader socio-economic framework. The major is primarily focused on preparation of scientists and researchers who will study in depth theoretical knowledge, which they will be able to use in various scientific disciplines. Therefore, the major is primarily aimed at developing the scientific activities of students by individual approach and by their involvement in domestic and foreign research teams. During the research training, students will be able to attend classes led by visiting professors from prestigious foreign universities from France, Germany, Austria, Great Britain and the USA.

The major is based on the Anglo-Saxon model of connecting economics and politics, which enables wider theoretical application of different methodological approaches of economics and history, and offers a greater possibility of developing economic history as an independent historical discipline based on interdisciplinarity and wide variety of theoretical approaches. In this aspect, the Department of Economic History is the only scientific place in the Czech Republic that offers this specialization. The P.D. program major would especially like to build on the broad theoretical grounding in conjunction with a deep knowledge of historical realities. In this context, it would primarily reflect the number of new approaches, which was recently profiled in the history and economics – public choice theory, institutional economics, behavioral economics, a new history of international relations, new political history, the new political economy, cultural anthropology, new history of ideas, new cultural history. Graduates of this major will be able to participate in scientific activities in domestic and foreign institutions and will be well positioned to work in the private and public sector.
