5HD382 Chapters in Economic History: “ From Division to Cooperation: West and East Europe in the Cold War and Beyond“. The course will be taught in English and it will take place daily from March 21st, 2016 to March 24th, 2016. The instructor will be Dr. Angela Romano (University Institute Florence, Italy).

Course contents
• Europe at the end of WWII.
• The organisation of the West: Marshall Plan, OECE, ECSC.
• Stalin and the birth of the Soviet bloc.
• West: creation and development of the European Economic Community (EEC).
• East: The Khrushchev era, ideological innovations, and the relaunch of COMECON.
• West: A single-voice multifaceted EC Ostpolitk.
• Still Cold War or new intra-European relations? Discussion of crises and case studies in the 1980s
• The collapse of Communist regimes, the reunification of Germany.
• The reorganisation of Europe: the creation of the EU, the PHARE initiative, and enlargement to Central and Eastern Europe.
• Assessment of main factors and dynamics influencing European integration processes as they happened.
